Character Information
Name: Jasper
Canon: Steven Universe
Canon Point: The beginning of Steven Universe Future
Age: 5,000 years
History: https://steven-universe.fandom.com/wiki/Jasper
Personality:
A BULLY
Jasper's sense of self is built on some deep insecurities about being created on Earth, and about failing to win the war she was created to fight. While she's proud of her strength and loves to flaunt it, she's all too bitterly aware of how meaningless it can be, and so she supplements her security in herself by bullying other people whenever she gets the opportunity. Although she's primarily a brawler, she gets kicks out of hurting people both physically and verbally – anything to feel she's definitively better than someone else is. She's particularly harsh towards people who remind her of herself, like Amethyst, but if she has an opportunity to exercise power over someone else for any reason she'll generally take it.
REPRESSED
Jasper has a stick up her ass compared to the other quartz soldiers we see in the series, who seem to be mostly be carefree and rambunctious. Quartzes are naturally gregarious, but Jasper is vocal about her disdain for the power of friendship. Judging by the disparaging comments Holly Blue Agate makes about how wild and unruly the Earth quartzes she's in charge of are, and how much Jasper resents being from Earth, it seems that Jasper's more joyless demeanour has developed as a reaction to other gems' similar assumptions about her. While the other surviving Earth quartzes were deemed useless and kept out of the way after the war, Jasper, as the sole perfect quartz produced on that planet, was selected by the strict, all-business Yellow Diamond to continue serving under her as a soldier. This is a point of pride for Jasper, who would absolutely look down on the way the other Earth quartzes spend their time, doing kick flips off walls and flirting with humans and making trouble for their Agate supervisor, and so she has built a large part of her identity on not being like the other gems who came out of the failed Earth colony. She's not a failure like them, and she's not an undisciplined idiot like them.
There are frequent glimpses of who she could be if she wasn't holding herself to these standards, though. Whenever Jasper cuts loose in a fight, for example, a whole lot of those walls come down, and we get to see her having a good time. (We also get to see all of her identical rectangular teeth.) Beyond just her penchant for physical bullying, she loves fighting for its own sake. When she fights Steven in 'Little Homeschool' she's so excited about having a worthwhile challenge that he yells at her to stop laughing while he's repeatedly punching her. When he offers to fight her in the first place she makes this face and goes "Really??" as if she is a big stupid dog and someone's mentioned walkies.
She also very clearly has a flair for the dramatic; she loves to make an entrance, and will go out of her way to do so even in ways that can't strictly be justified as practical. She likes to wear capes, for effect. She could probably learn to have fun in other ways, but it would take a lot to push her out of her comfort zone. Getting kidnapped by the Gentry might just do that, depending on where she ends up.
STUBBORN
Jaspers never give up! She never gives up the tasks she's dedicated herself to, and she'll never give up the narrow-minded view of the world she has locked herself into in order to make sense of the horrible things that have happened to her! She only gave up her attempt to murder Steven once the literal Diamonds were there to explain that actually he wasn't Rose Quartz and also Rose Quartz was Pink Diamond the whole time – but even after two years of happiness and downtime, where most of the other gems who have chosen to stay on Earth have been learning how to live their own lives and respect Earth's inhabitants, Jasper is insisting on sitting on her own in a rock hut in the woods, on a patch of land that she doesn't allow any animal or plant life to encroach on because she hates "Earthlings", dedicating her time to "training" because she can't conceive of a purpose for her life that isn't fighting and is convinced that trying anything else would be weakness.
HOWEVER...
LOVES TO LICK BOOTS, BUT ONLY IF THEY HAVE ALREADY STEPPED ON HER FACE
Jasper has an ingrained respect for authority – specifically the Diamond Authority, but as we see with Lapis Lazuli and, later, Steven, anyone who is capable of kicking her ass and willing to actually do it will make a decent substitute. She likes having orders to follow and a job to do, and if she's accepted someone's authority as legitimate, she wouldn't refuse their orders even when she doesn't like them or finds them boring. If she's in a terrible situation she can't fight her way out of, that's what she's earned, and if someone forces her into line with brute strength, then they've earned her loyalty. Being taken prisoner by the Gentry will have been a welcome return to the kind of order she feels most comfortable with -- at least, at first. How eagerly she'll have wound up embracing that will depend on who her boss ends up being.
INSECURE
I feel like this is kind of redundant considering how much it's come up in every other section here, but this is basically the core of Jasper's character! She has held the firm belief that she is a failure for nearly as long as she's lived. She projects the opposite, because she is supposed to be the perfect Quartz, the only product of the Earth colony that wasn't a failure, but when it comes down to it, she was made specifically for a war that her side lost. Pink Diamond was (supposedly) shattered, and the colony Jasper was created to defend was abandoned. Everything since then has been an unfulfilling attempt to make up for what feels, inescapably, like a deep personal failing. On top of that, she has now found out Pink Diamond was Rose Quartz the whole time and didn't really die until like 16 years ago, which has been a substantial blow to her sense of identity, since the war she was made to fight wasn't even the actual will of the person she was created for, and to whom she'd believed she was always loyal to. She has some issues about all of this but she is absolutely not doing anything about them except for smashing rocks with her face.
Where and how did your character enter the Hedge? Where and how did your character enter the Hedge? Walked out of the door of her angry dipshit cave to find that there was way more plant growth (INEXCUSABLE) than she remembered allowing to get onto her PATCH and spent like half an hour trying to obliterate the new plant growth and failing
Additional Memories Lost: Jasper will have parted with a substantial quantity of her memories of missions undertaken in the thousands of years between the war on Earth and her eventual return to the planet at the end of season 1 of the show, creating gaps as large as a thousand years at once in her memory of her life. I'm thinking about more lost memories but I think the specifics would depend on which season she's in, because that will drastically affect how she's holding up and what angle I'll be approaching her from here -- if that's OK, I can elaborate on additional lost memories along with other "older servant" details that would be affected by which of the Gentry she belongs to.
Skillsets: Combat. Jasper was created specifically to be good at fighting, and in addition to being the 'perfect' example of her gem type, has had thousands of years to hone her abilities.
She is not good at anything else.
Inventory: Jasper has no possessions.
